Description
One of the most important and key intermediate products of the crude oil refining industry is Naphtha cut. This product is used as feed in petrochemical units including steam crackers, catalytic conversion and isomerization . All kinds of naphtha cuts are produced and supplied in refinery processes.
Naphtha includes hydrocarbons with 5 to 12 carbon atoms whose boiling point varies from 30 to 200 degrees Celsius. That is, if we heat crude oil from 30 degrees to 200 degrees Celsius and separate the boiled part, naphtha will be obtained. Usually 15 to 30% of crude oil boils at this temperature, so the same amount of crude oil can be directly converted into naphtha. But naphtha in the market is usually offered in two types of light naphtha (hydrocarbons of 5 and 6 carbons) and heavy naphtha
(hydrocarbons of 6 to 12 carbons).
As mentioned, naphtha is one of the most important feedstocks used in the petrochemical industry. Naphtha in crude oil refineries is usually fed to gasoline units (Catalytic Reforming) and isomerization to produce reformate (Reformate) and isomerate (Isomerate) in the gasoline pool , mixed and supplied as fuel. It should also be noted that petrochemical complexes produce light olefins ( ethylene , propylene , butadiene and butylenes) and aromatics ( benzene , toluene and xylene ) that the feed of these units is also light and heavy naphtha.
The Center for Value Chain Studies believes that due to access to light and quality hydrocarbon resources such as NGL, condensate and light crude oil, our dear country Iran has the ability to produce quality and competitive naphtha to provide the petrochemical industry. has the ability to produce basic products and develop the value chain of these products with the help of steam cracker processes and aromatic production. On the other hand, it should be remembered that sustainable and competitive development can be expected for petrochemical complexes and projects when the relationship between refining and petrochemical industry is systematically defined and maintained.
